What kind of photograph works best as a reference?

It is very important to have a crisp, well-focused photograph. Close-ups are the easiest to crop and enlarge to a 5 x 7 or 8 x 10. Digital photographs work as long as they are originally taken very close to the subject. Professional, non-digital photographs are the best.

Can you work from a digital photo that I send through E-mail?

It rarely happens; but sometimes it’s possible.  It must be an extremely large file without much reduction.  The quality of your portrait will suffer if I can’t see the detail, or if the detail is fuzzy.

Can you change the hair or smile on this photo?  Can you make me look thinner?

I have changed the hair for customers in the past and in my opinion, it never looks completely natural.  I can smooth tangles and do minor changes, but transplanting a separate hairstyle or different smile would tarnish the results.   Minor changes like lightening a black tooth, removing blemishes, softening wrinkles and pulling back large ears are all things I’ve done that look natural.  Yes, I can make a double chin a bit smaller, but if you reduce too much it tends to not look like the subject.

How long does it take you to finish my portrait?

I like to draw/paint the initial portrait and then tweak it for several days; stepping away from it and then coming back to it with fresh eyes in order to see the inaccuracies.   If I don’t have a waiting list you would have your portrait within 2 weeks.   I usually have a waiting list October through December.

How big is the portrait going to be?

The size from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin is usually between 5 and 9 inches depending on how large you want it to be.  I always include a small vignette of clothing that adds 3 to 4 inches to the total length.  If more clothing is requested, there may be an additional fee.

Do you ever paint or draw from a live sitting?

I haven’t for a long time.  Subjects can’t hold a smile that long and I think you end up with a stiff or unnatural looking result.

What is the cost of a picture with 2 or more people in it?

My prices are charged per person.  If you have 2 sisters in one picture your  price would be $270 for charcoal or $800 for full color.

I would like to order a portrait.  What do I do now?

Call or email me and we will visit about the photograph you will be using.  Sometimes I have you email a copy of it to me to make sure it will be acceptable (proper focus, large enough, etc.)   Once we decide on a photograph, you will mail it to me protected in a photo mailer or between 2 pieces of corrugated cardboard.
